Self-directed learning
In self-directed learning students take charge of their own learning processes and progress at their own pace. This involves diagnosing their learning needs, setting goals, and selecting appropriate learning strategies. Key elements include learning motivation, planning and implementation, self-monitoring, and interpersonal communication. In this model, individual autonomy and learner control are of crucial importance, making it an essential competence for adults in today's world. Overall, self-directed learning empowers vocational education students to become more autonomous, motivated, and adaptable, giving them the necessary skills to succeed in their careers and in lifelong learning.
In the video, we present some things to take into consideration when creating business cases in terms of self-directed learning
Personal reflection
The six steps for supporting self-directed learning are 1) goal setting, 2) monitoring progress, 3) planning activities, 4) scheduling, 5) identifying needed resources, and 6) feedback. Think of a few ways that a case in your field could implement some of these key steps.
-
You could include a prompt for students to search more information of a specific aspect of the case when the matter arises in the case. This can provide opportunities for group activities, develop information gathering skills, and create structure and sub-goals for students.
-
You could write in the case some breaks in appropriate spots to enable group activities and feedback on sub-goals.
Think about how teaching with case studies that foster self-directed learning differs from more traditional teaching.
-
Teaching using case studies puts more emphasis on the students’ motivation, self-directedness, and group work outside the classroom.
-
Students have more say in the goals and the timing and order of the material they go through.
-
Students have more responsibilities in searching additional information and requesting feedback for peers and teachers. This still requires support and monitoring from the teacher.
