Determining the didactic orientation

“Determining the didactic orientation" refers to establishing the educational goals and teaching approach you intend to achieve with the case study. This involves deciding what you want the students to learn (this might include knowledge acquisition, skill development, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and application of theoretical concepts) and how you plan to facilitate that learning through the case study method.

It is important because by determining the didactic orientation, educators ensure that the case study is pedagogically sound, aligns with educational goals, and provides a meaningful and engaging learning experience for students. This thoughtful planning ultimately leads to better learning outcomes and a more effective educational process.

Personal reflection

Have you already designed a case study?

  1. If so, reflect on a recent case study you designed. How did you determine its didactic orientation?

  2. How did the didactic orientation of your case study impact student learning and achievement?

  3. What evidence do you have that students met the learning objectives, and how can you improve this outcome?
