Network analysis tools in the process phase Problem
Teaching cases are always built around a challenging scenario or problematic situation. These challenges or problems normally involve multiple stakeholders and interdependency exists among them. A thorough and accurate analysis of the relationships between these stakeholders can lead to a holistic view of the problem. It also offers different perspectives from various involved stakeholders, helps in capturing the potential risks and vulnerabilities of the case problem.
In the video, we list some tools that can be used to map out and analyze the network relationships.
Personal reflection
What are the benefits of using network analysis tools for case studies?
There are various benefits these network analysis tools can bring, varying to some extent the level of complex and teaching objectives of a case study. But in general, using these tools, students can:
- Get a straightforward visualized understanding of the stakeholder relationships.
- Identify the key stakeholders/players.
- Have a better understanding of the status quo.
- Make informed decisions.
How to design a case study with the help of a network analysis tool?
- Choose a network analysis tool. (e.g., SmartDraw, demo video link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kc2Dv5Y6FGk; or Power BI, demo video link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNSHu0rkew8)
- Use the following case scenario as input to map the stakeholder relationships and locate the key players: a local family-owned snack bar specializing in street food has a loyal customer base, and its impact is getting larger: more and more new visitors are received since two months ago. The owners are now looking for market expansion opportunities. The owner calculated carefully their revenue, costs, and did some market research around the neighborhood. He’s thinking maybe open another shop in a nearby neighborhood or offer more diversified food in the current shop.
- Add the result of this analysis as a part of complementary case study material, or show students how to do the analysis in class.
